No doubt that Motorola Xoom has been recently announced two months ago, and now we have the Apple iPad 2 that has been unveiled last week. We have two strong tablet contestants, in which both have their respective strengths and weaknesses, in terms of both hardware and software.

From the appearance, the Apple iPad 2 appears to be shorter than the Motorola Xoom by 7.9mm. On the other hand, the iPad 2 is wider by 17.9mm as compare to the Xoom. The iPad 2 is indeed the slimmer tablet as it has only 8.8mm of thickness as opposed to Xoom. The iPad 2 is also the winner for being the lightest tablet, which weighs only 601g for the WiFi version and 613g for the 3G version, unlike the Xoom that has the weight of 730g.

In terms of display, the Xoom triumphs as it has a 10.1-inch wide-screen with WXGA resolution (1280 x 800) over the iPad 2 which remains the same 9.7-inch screen with 1024 x 768 resolution as its predecessor. The Xoom also has a higher pixel density which translates into clearer and sharper display than the iPad 2. However, the iPad 2 has the advantage of the fingerprint resistant oleophobic coating.

Performance-wise, the iPad 2 and Xoom share the similarity of using a 1GHz dual-core processor. The iPad 2 uses an Apple A5 dual-core processor while the Xoom utilizes the NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. The Xoom has a 1 GB of internal RAM, but Apple remains silent on the amount of internal RAM of the iPad 2.

Furthermore, the Xoom has a 5-megapixel (2592 x 1944) rear camera and a front 2-megapixel (1600 x 1200) camera. In addition, the rear camera of the Xoom has auto-focus and dual-LED flash. The iPad 2 has a dual-camera as well, with a lower megapixel camera. It has a 0.7-megapixel (960 x 720) rear camera and a VGA (640 x 480) front camera. Unfortunately, Apple does not include any flash for its rear camera on its iPad 2.

In addition, the Xoom will be running on Android 3.0 and the iPad 2 will be running on Apple iOS 4.3. The key difference between these two OS comes down to its user interface. Android 3.0 has a multiple homescreens that allows users to place shortcuts and functional widget on it, allowing quick access to the apps or information they required. On the other hand, the iOS 4.3 displays its drawer of apps on the main screen. However, at the time of writing, Apple iOS has more apps in the market as compared to Android.

It turns down to personal preference when choosing either the Apple iPad 2 or the Motorola Xoom to suit his needs and wants. Nevertheless, the iPad 2 is not worth an upgrade for those who had owned the original iPad, as the iPad 2 is not a major leap from the original iPad.
