Microsoft in the Post PC Era
Many a desktop user has complained about Microsofts Windows 8 operating system migrating to a user interface more suitable to a smartphone or tablet. They do not see the big picture.
If you are old enough to remember the days before the internet, the personal computer was a tool for work and than a gaming device. When the internet became part of our daily lives, computer sales took off. One day, everyone would have a personal computer. This is still true today, but the definition of what is a personal computer has changed.
For some people, a smartphone alone will be enough to meet their personal computing needs. Others, finding a smartphone insufficient, would select or add a tablet to their stable of devices. Desktops and laptops will eventually be relegated to their status of prior to the advent of the Internet age: machines for work.
IDC estimates that this year tablets will outsell traditional desktops. By the end of 2014, tablet sales will surpass laptop sales. Nearly three smartphones are sold today, per desktop of laptop sold. All this means, is in two years time, desktops and laptops will make up just about one in every five computers sold.
In what has been dubbed as the Post-PC era, you find Microsoft which once held a 90% share in personal computers, now looking at holding a 90% share in one in five personal computers sold within two years tie. That is really just an 18% share of all personal computers. Holding on to that 18% share is going to be harder in the Post-PC era.
Microsofts stranglehold on the personal computer market, was secured by the fact that is was the center of application development. Pretty much all software developed was Windows compatible, with only a fraction of the software developed for Windows also being released for Mac OS and Linux. If you wanted a computer that could run your work related applications, and your entertainment applications, a Windows computer was the ultimate jack-of-all-trades.
This is the raison dêtre for Windows 8 is to maintain this status. With Windows Phone 8, Windows RT and Windows 8, Microsoft is hoping to get a substantial share of the smartphone and tablet market. the segment which will soon comprise four in every five computers sold. With a substantial share of the smartphone and tablet market, apps would be created for Windows Phones and Windows Tablets, could be easily ported for Windows desktops and laptops.
If Microsoft is unable to break into the smartphone and tablet market, it will find itself holding on to the lions share of the traditional desktop market, but stagnating app development for desktops in general would further threaten its postion. The app ecosystem that has made Windows dominant for so long, would cease to exist.
As the traditional personal computer retreats to becoming a work device, consumer software development will focus on Apples iOS and Google Android. Less and less consumer software will be developed for desktops. In this environment, operating systems like Mac OS, Chrome OS and the various Linux distributions will find it easier to compete with Windows. When desktops and laptops are no longer expected to be multi-faceted devices but rather dedicated business machines, it is of little importance whether or not you laptop can run Starcraft III.
Those claiming that Windows 8 tablet centric interface will be the death of Windows on the traditional desktop are missing the point. The failure of Windows Phone and Windows 8 on the tablet is what would sound the death knell for Microsofts desktop operating system.

Android 5 0 Key Lime Pie appears in NenaMark Benchmarks
We’ve just barely gotten Android 4.2 - Jelly Bean, currently only officially available on the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and Nexus 4, and it looks like Sony has gotten their hands on Android 5.0, which is rumored to be named Key Lime Pie. Which sounds a lot better than Kandy Kane, am I right? Although we also thought that Android 4.2 would be Key Lime Pie, which turned out to be just a dot upgrade from Jelly Bean and kept the same name. This is all rumor-based and should be taken with a grain of salt as usual, but it’s still quite interesting.
Last week, a benchmark of a Sony LT30i was found over at NenaMark, as a benchmark. It appears to have a 1.6GHz processor (assuming Snapdragon quad-core), along with a Qualcomm Adreno 220 GPU, and a display of 1280×720 resolutions. You can see the benchmark scores below, along with some specs of the LT30i.

If this leak is indeed legit, it could be the Sony Xperia T running Android 5.0. Or it could be a slight upgrade to the Xperia T. Which is also known as the LT30p, which is making this all sounds pretty interesting. The spec’s look very similar to the James Bond phone that’s now available on AT&T:
- 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8260A SoC
- Qualcom Adreno 225 GPU
Could this be one of the devices that Sony said we would see in the early part of 2013? Highly doubtful since Android 4.2 just hit AOSP a few days ago, I don’t see Android 5.0 being announced before Google I/O next June. But who knows, with Google anything is possible. With Android 5.0 not even being announced yet, I doubt we would see this at CES in January or at Mobile World Congress in February.
Are you excited to see more Sony devices running current versions of Android? I know I am. It’s always good to have more Android manufacturers. We can’t let Samsung get all our money. But we’ll definitely keep you updated on any news we receive regarding the LT30i from Sony, as it seems pretty interesting. Especially since it’s the only phone so far to be running Android 5.0 that’s shown up in benchmarks.

Are You Ready To Drown Your PC in Oil
You know how hot your laptop can get when you use it for hours? Imagine how hot servers —the high-powered computers that run websites and apps— must get... Now imagine a whole building full of servers running at full tilt—and grab some ice water.
Keeping data centers cool is a major engineering problem, not to mention an ecological one. Intel is working on a new approach: submerging them in oil.
Intel just concluded a year-long test of the tech with immersion-equipment company Green Revolution Cooling. It has declared that its chips are ready for the dunked-in-oil technique, reports Rich Miller at Data Center Knowledge.
Today, data centers use air cooling. This means things like building bigger buildings, so servers can be spread out, plus limiting the number of servers in each building, If liquid cooling works—as Intels tests show it does—this means that existing buildings can house more computers and each one can run more workloads.
Plus, submerged computers may be more powerful because faster CPUs usually require more power which produces more heat.
The liquid involved is mineral oil which reduces heat like water, but doesnt conduct electricity.
Submerged desktop PCs have actually been around for years. Below Ive posted a video that shows one being built in 2007. And some old-school supercomputers used liquid refrigerants. But submerged high-performance computers running in a data center are new and could be a fantastic alternative as the world moves to cloud computing.
Cloud computing is where applications are run in a data center and accessed from a PC, mobile phone or tablet. The cloud requires lots of servers in lots of data centers. This could be a great new way to cool them.
The major advantage of mineral oil cooling is that it is relatively cheap and can be adapted to work with a variety of systems ranging from small computers to massive servers. Since it is non-conductive, the oil doesnt short out circuits and is harmless to computer hardware. On the other hand, it can be very difficult or almost impossible to clean and remove mineral oil from the hardware once it has been submerged.
The cooling alternative is definitely appealing to massive server arrays, saving precious energy and cooling costs. The only downside is that the oil needs to be flushed and changed every ten years or so.

How Apple lost 50 Billion in value in just two days
On Friday, Apple lost the title of the world’s most valuable publicly traded company to Exxon Mobil, after shedding 14.4 percent in share price – and over £50 billion in value – in just two days.
CEO Tim Cook shrugged off the news, and focused the attention of investors on the record results of the last quarter. “The only companies that report better quarters pump oil. I do not know about you all, but I do not want to work for those companies,” he told the audience at Apple’s Cupertino Campus.

Exxon Mobil was the world’s most valuable public company from 2005 to 2012, when it lost this title to Apple and its record $656 billion value. But in the last few months, the Cupertino giant has failed to impress investors, despite posting $13.1 billion net profit for the fourth quarter of 2013 and selling more iPhones and iPads than in any previous quarter in its history.
Previously, some overly optimistic analysts predicted that Apple could become the first public company to break the $1 trillion limit. Enthusiasts had even started a website ‘Things Apple Is Worth More Than’, which stated that Apple was bigger than the entire 1977 US stock market, and worth more than annual worldwide lottery sales.
However, Apple shares have fallen 37 percent since the record high last September, while Exxon Mobil has been steadily increasing in value. At the close on Wall Street on Friday, Apple had a market value of $413 billion, against Exxon’s $418 billion.
CEO of the company Tim Cook seemed unfazed by the share price, and congratulated employees on the work well done, saying “we just had the best quarter of any technology company ever.” According to 9 to 5 Mac, Cook had also put the final nail in the coffin of the ‘cheap iPhone’ rumours, saying that Apple will continue to focus on providing premium products and not chasing market share.
During the Friday meeting, the CEO reported on the work to improve working conditions at Apple’s suppliers. A few days ago, the company published its annual Supplier Responsibility Progress Report, in which it outlined efforts to stop underage employment and worker abuse at the contract factories that make iPhones and iPads.
Some analysts have suggested that the value drop has little to do with the performance of the company, and more with high frequency trading algorithms.
In related news, Jobs, the film based on the life and times of Apple’s deceased CEO, has just seen its premiere at the Sundance festival in Park City, Utah. It will arrive in UK cinemas on 19 April.
Co-founder of the company Steve ‘Woz’ Wozniak has previously criticised some aspects of the film, saying that it credited Jobs with ideas that didn’t originate at Apple. It should be mentioned that Woz is contributing to another film about Jobs, based on the official biography.

LG Optimus Black P970 Cost 430 Euro in Singapore April 2011
T-Mobile are going to be stocking the LG Optimus Black in the UK, and their latest price guide shows it free from just £25 a month on a 24 month contract. It is not clear yet what you will get for this £25 a month yet but at least we have a price to start from.Theres another option for those who don’t like the idea of being tied to a contract. Expansys UK offer you to pre-order the unlocked version of the Black for 460 euros, but its availability is scheduled for 18 April.
The super slim Optimus Black packing the bright NOVA display will cost around €430 when it goes on sale in Singapore in April.
