How Apple lost 50 Billion in value in just two days

On Friday, Apple lost the title of the world’s most valuable publicly traded company to Exxon Mobil, after shedding 14.4 percent in share price – and over £50 billion in value – in just two days.
CEO Tim Cook shrugged off the news, and focused the attention of investors on the record results of the last quarter. “The only companies that report better quarters pump oil. I do not know about you all, but I do not want to work for those companies,” he told the audience at Apple’s Cupertino Campus.
The leaderboard
Exxon Mobil was the world’s most valuable public company from 2005 to 2012, when it lost this title to Apple and its record $656 billion value. But in the last few months, the Cupertino giant has failed to impress investors, despite posting $13.1 billion net profit for the fourth quarter of 2013 and selling more iPhones and iPads than in any previous quarter in its history.
Previously, some overly optimistic analysts predicted that Apple could become the first public company to break the $1 trillion limit. Enthusiasts had even started a website ‘Things Apple Is Worth More Than’, which stated that Apple was bigger than the entire 1977 US stock market, and worth more than annual worldwide lottery sales.
However, Apple shares have fallen 37 percent since the record high last September, while Exxon Mobil has been steadily increasing in value. At the close on Wall Street on Friday, Apple had a market value of $413 billion, against Exxon’s $418 billion.
CEO of the company Tim Cook seemed unfazed by the share price, and congratulated employees on the work well done, saying “we just had the best quarter of any technology company ever.” According to 9 to 5 Mac, Cook had also put the final nail in the coffin of the ‘cheap iPhone’ rumours, saying that Apple will continue to focus on providing premium products and not chasing market share.
During the Friday meeting, the CEO reported on the work to improve working conditions at Apple’s suppliers. A few days ago, the company published its annual Supplier Responsibility Progress Report, in which it outlined efforts to stop underage employment and worker abuse at the contract factories that make iPhones and iPads.
Some analysts have suggested that the value drop has little to do with the performance of the company, and more with high frequency trading algorithms.
In related news, Jobs, the film based on the life and times of Apple’s deceased CEO, has just seen its premiere at the Sundance festival in Park City, Utah. It will arrive in UK cinemas on 19 April.
Co-founder of the company Steve ‘Woz’ Wozniak has previously criticised some aspects of the film, saying that it credited Jobs with ideas that didn’t originate at Apple. It should be mentioned that Woz is contributing to another film about Jobs, based on the official biography.

Apple iPad 2 VS Motorola Xoom

| iPad 2 |
No doubt that Motorola Xoom has been recently announced two months ago, and now we have the Apple iPad 2 that has been unveiled last week. We have two strong tablet contestants, in which both have their respective strengths and weaknesses, in terms of both hardware and software.
From the appearance, the Apple iPad 2 appears to be shorter than the Motorola Xoom by 7.9mm. On the other hand, the iPad 2 is wider by 17.9mm as compare to the Xoom. The iPad 2 is indeed the slimmer tablet as it has only 8.8mm of thickness as opposed to Xoom. The iPad 2 is also the winner for being the lightest tablet, which weighs only 601g for the WiFi version and 613g for the 3G version, unlike the Xoom that has the weight of 730g.
In terms of display, the Xoom triumphs as it has a 10.1-inch wide-screen with WXGA resolution (1280 x 800) over the iPad 2 which remains the same 9.7-inch screen with 1024 x 768 resolution as its predecessor. The Xoom also has a higher pixel density which translates into clearer and sharper display than the iPad 2. However, the iPad 2 has the advantage of the fingerprint resistant oleophobic coating.
Performance-wise, the iPad 2 and Xoom share the similarity of using a 1GHz dual-core processor. The iPad 2 uses an Apple A5 dual-core processor while the Xoom utilizes the NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. The Xoom has a 1 GB of internal RAM, but Apple remains silent on the amount of internal RAM of the iPad 2.
Furthermore, the Xoom has a 5-megapixel (2592 x 1944) rear camera and a front 2-megapixel (1600 x 1200) camera. In addition, the rear camera of the Xoom has auto-focus and dual-LED flash. The iPad 2 has a dual-camera as well, with a lower megapixel camera. It has a 0.7-megapixel (960 x 720) rear camera and a VGA (640 x 480) front camera. Unfortunately, Apple does not include any flash for its rear camera on its iPad 2.
In addition, the Xoom will be running on Android 3.0 and the iPad 2 will be running on Apple iOS 4.3. The key difference between these two OS comes down to its user interface. Android 3.0 has a multiple homescreens that allows users to place shortcuts and functional widget on it, allowing quick access to the apps or information they required. On the other hand, the iOS 4.3 displays its drawer of apps on the main screen. However, at the time of writing, Apple iOS has more apps in the market as compared to Android.
It turns down to personal preference when choosing either the Apple iPad 2 or the Motorola Xoom to suit his needs and wants. Nevertheless, the iPad 2 is not worth an upgrade for those who had owned the original iPad, as the iPad 2 is not a major leap from the original iPad.

Apple Same Microsoft Scenario

Hear that? It’s the sound of corks popping as Apple’s stock price rockets to new highs. Following Apple’s landmark victory against Samsung late Friday night, the company’s stock price (NASDAQ:AAPL) opened today at a record high of $680 per share, the first day of trading since the court ruling. This record surpasses the company’s all-time high of $674.88, which was achieved on last Tuesday, August 21. This record also pushed Apple’s market capitalization to a new high of $637 billion.
Last Friday, the jury in the Samsung v. Apple case awarded Apple $1.049 billion in damages. After just three days of deliberating, the jury found that Samsung purposely infringed on key Apple patents. Investors are clearly reacting in kind, sending the stock to record heights.
The jury originally awarded Apple $1,051,855,000 in damages, but Judge Lucy Koh sent the jurors back to deliberate over two discrepancies that resulted in Apple being awarded $2.20 million in damages. The jurors overturned their previous decision on a specific patent, thus lowering the amount Samsung owes by $2.2 million in damages.
Samsung is now expected to appeal the ruling, calling it a “loss for the American consumer” in a released statement on Friday. Samsung’s stock price is reacting predictably following the court ruling. The stock is currently trading down 7.45% on the Korea Stock Exchange as investors are seemingly reacting to court ruling on Friday. This has caused the company’s market value to drop $12 billion.
Apple’s stock price reached previous highs based primarily on speculation of upcoming products. Apple is widely expected to launch a new iPhone in the middle of next month. Then, perhaps as soon as October, a new, smaller iPad could be announced. Then there’s the so-called Apple HDTV, a heavily rumored, top-secret project that seemingly excites both the consumer and investor alike. With at least two of these hot products launching this year, chances are Apple will surpass today’s record stock price and market capitalization several times before the New Year’s ball drops.
I want to leave you with one thought... Microsofts stock price reached $58.375 on December 31, 1999 and that made the company worth over $500 Billion dollars at the time, Now Microsoft market cap is $258.08 Billion at $30.75 per stock, Are we going to see the same thing happen to Apple ? Time will tell.

Apple Regains Back Title And iOS Sales Overtakes Android Sales In The US iPhones and iPads Everywhere

“The last time we saw iOS overtake Android in the US was when the iPhone 4S was released and Apple managed to retain its lead for three consecutive periods. This time we predict that Apple will beat its previous high of 49.3% and achieve its highest ever share of the US smartphone market within the next two periods“, said Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.Source: Pocketnow
